Until 2008 I was using Nikon equipment, a D70 then a D80 DSLR and a couple of Sigma lenses (70-300mm and 170-500mm). However, as I was not that happy with the performance of the Nikon camera I switched over to Canon. This move was also prompted by the fact that Canon had the type of lens I wanted (a 400mm prime telephoto) for a reasonable price (less than £1000) while Nikon did not. For this reason alone, the decision to jump ship was not a hard one.

My current equipment is as follows:

Canon 40D 10.1 Megapixel DSLR
Canon 20D 8.2 Megapixel DSLR
Canon EF 400mm f5.6 L USM telephoto
Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L USM zoom
Canon EF-S 18-55mm zoom
Canon Speedlite 430 EX II flash
SpeedGraphic flash extender (Better Beamer-type flash extender)
Slik AMT tripod
Manfrotto monopod
LowePro MiniTrekker photo backpack

The 400mm is the lens I use the most for bird photography, but the 70-200mm also gets a fair bit of use for birds as well, especially in hides if birds are close and for larger birds that are fairly close as well as ducks, etc, on public lakes.

The 400mm is the best lens I have ever owned although, at f5.6 at its' widest aperture it does mean that getting a decent shutter speed at all but the highest ISOs on dull days and in forests and woods is a bit of a struggle. I do aspire to - one day - getting one of those superb Canon L-series 500mm or 600mm telephotos but, given the prices they fetch, it'll be a long wait. In the meantime the 400mm will do me nicely.
